Godard's Hail Mary
This was one of the first art films I've seen in a long time, and it was horrible. It was so bad. Shot of moon, of waves, of contemplating a rubik's cube. I am tired of Godard's Brechtian inauthenticity. It is weird when I think that Spike Lee is more Godard than Godard nowadays. Manny Farber said Godard was like a zoo of animals. Godard is more like a man who has thought he has launched himself into new ground and new territories, but does not realize he still sits absentmindedly at the table of high-modernism. Godard speaks to museums and old French novels.

There is a reason Godard could never relate to the third world in his films. He is so rooted in his Frenchness that everything he attempted to absorb from outside the borders of himself ended up being cardboard parodies that lacked the very density of materiality.

It's funny how most comments these days about radical filmmaking or whatever is somewhat related to Spike Lee. I'm curious as to why you say Lee is out Godarding Godard. Or was that just a general "f-you" statement? Btw, I agree with you on Godard... perhaps his most relevant work isn't even in film anymore, but his recent gallery opening? I dunno.

These days I'm rarely excited about films anymore, and it's kind of depressing. Actually, I just saw half of Le Bete Humaine and reygadas' Battle in Heaven and they were pretty good.

I saw Lee's Bamboozled and that movie was more of a Godard film in that it was probably closer to the violence of Brecht into illuminating society through form, rather than Godard's absolute obsession of form over society. Although he'd probably contend that they are the same, he does not reach society. He reaches museum goers and high art dvd watchers.

There is this disdain at UCLA that is very infectious. I like Godard, and I like this new stuff. All in all it's just about playing every single side and constantly changing your stance on things. Who knows, tomorrow I'll be praising Godard again. Meh.

Happy New Year, man. Keep it going.
